Surface EMG relies on detecting tiny electrical nerve impulses at the skin surface. These impulses are easily disrupted. If the electrode isn’t placed exactly over the motor point, the signal becomes noisy.
If the patient sweats, moves slightly, or has uneven skin conditions, the amplitude and quality of the reading can change immediately. Research consistently reports that EMG-based systems suffer from “electrode shifting” and significant variability between sessions and between patients.
